************************************************************************ IERS Message No. 226 April 08, 2013 ************************************************************************ Change in the IERS Central Bureau To the IERS community, After the changes at the beginning of this year (see IERS Message No. 222), another transition occurred on April 1st. Daniela Thaller was named Director of the IERS Central Bureau by the host organization, the German Federal Agency of Cartography and Geodesy (BKG). Daniela Thaller, who has formerly been with the Technical University of Munich, the GeoForschungsZentrum Potsdam, and the Astronomical Institute of the University of Bern, will also head BKG's Section of Fundamental Geodesy, Combination of Space Geodesy. Daniela has been Chair of the IERS Working Group on SINEX Format since 2011. The former Director of the Central Bureau, Bernd Richter, is now head of BKG's Department of Geoinformation. I would like to thank him for his outstanding work for the IERS which began on 1 January 2001, a span of more than 12 years. As the GGOS representative, he will remain a member of the IERS Directing Board. Brian Luzum Chair, IERS Directing Board Dear colleagues, After the reorganisation of IERS in 2000, it was my privilege to serve the community as Director of the IERS Central Bureau for more than a dozen years. This time brought a wealth of interesting encounters with colleagues at IERS Workshops and Directing Board meetings. It was a time of discussions about the best ways to further develop the IERS' main products, the Earth Orientation Parameters and reference frames. The Global Geophysical Fluids Center has been reorganised, new working groups were established and former groups closed. The most challenging question for IERS is how to handle the combination of observations from different techniques. Daniela Thaller as representative of the next generation of geodesists and being experienced in combination studies will bring her own views to this discussion. I would like to thank all colleagues in the IERS community for their fruitful cooperation over the past years. Bernd Richter Dear colleagues in the IERS community, I am happy to take over the position as Director of the IERS Central Bureau starting April 1st. My predecessor Bernd Richter established the IERS Central Bureau at BKG in 2001 and I would like to thank him for his work as Director of the IERS Central Bureau, as well as, for many discussions that we had about topics related to the IERS during the past years. The two colleagues here at BKG supporting the IERS Central Bureau for many years, namely Wolfgang Dick and Sabine Bachmann, will continue their work for the IERS Central Bureau and I would like to thank them for their support for the IERS and their help to introduce me to the daily work of the IERS Central Bureau. As my field of work covered mainly the combination of the space-geodetic techniques for more than ten years, I hope that I can bring some experience to the community in order to further improve the products of the IERS and to satisfy the needs of the customers of the IERS in the future as well. I look forward to work in close cooperation with the IERS Directing Board, especially its chair Brian Luzum, the IERS Analysis Coordinator Tom Herring, and all individuals contributing to the IERS. The input of all of them is needed to keep the IERS as a successful service for the scientific community.
