*************************************************************************** IERS Message No. 54 March 2, 2004 *************************************************************************** IERS Working Group on Site Survey and Co-location The IERS Directing Board has established the Working Group on Site Survey and Co-location (IERS WG 2), jointly with IAG Sub-Commission 1.2 - WG 2 (SC1.2-WG2). This Group will address the current weaknesses present in many of the terrestrial survey connections at multi-technique geodetic observatories. The WG will evaluate the approaches used currently for site survey, including observational techniques, network design, classical adjustment, geometrical modelling and/or direct measurement techniques for invariant point determination, reference frame alignment, software implementation and SINEX generation. The aim is to develop one or more optimized and efficient site survey methods. This WG will investigate all aspects of terrestrial site survey relevant to technique combination, the WG will set standards and provide leadership in this endeavour. The WG will as necessary provide a pool of expertise to those groups who require it. The WG will aim to raise the quality and profile of this important technique. The chair of WG 2 is John Dawson. WG 2 will begin its work in Spring 2004 by setting up a pilot project and a first meeting at the EGU 2004 in Nice / France. A progress meeting is scheduled for 2005. A final report on the future directions of the activities related to site survey and co-location will be prepared at the end of 2005. More details can be found at http://www.iers.org/iers/about/wg/wg2/ .
