*************************************************************************** IERS Message No. 32 August 23, 2002 *************************************************************************** Postponement of IERS Workshop on Combination Research and Global Geophysical Fluids Dear colleagues, The date which was chosen for the workshop runs in parallel with an electronic fair in Munich. The DGFI, who is so kind as to act as the host for the workshop, was informed by the official travel office of Munich that it would be no problem to held a workshop of approx. 80 people in parallel to the busy days of the trade fair as long as the participates will make their hotel reservation as soon as possible. Obvious this year the interest in this electronic fair is enormous and in contrast to the world economic situation and for unknown reasons the number of participants has increased tremendously. When the hotel situation was checked by the IERS Central Bureau at the end of last week all hotels, economic and comfort class, were already booked. Also in the vicinity of Munich (travel time by public transportation less than 50 minutes) only "upper" class rooms are still available, rates starting at 160 Euro up to 260 Euro. In contrast to the opinion of the official travel office of Munich we feel that this is not acceptable for housing because usually the hotel prices are half or less. It would be unfair for most of the participants to be confronted with this hotel / prices situation, we are scientists and not businessmen / -women. After a short discussion with the local organisers and the main leaders of the workshop (Ben Chao and Markus Rothacher) it was decided that the workshop will still be held in Munich but will be postponed by one week. Thus, the IERS Workshop on Combination Research and Global Geophysical Fluids will be held at the Bavarian Academy of Sciences, Munich, Germany, 18-21 November 2002. I beg your pardon for this unforeseeable situation and any inconvenience which is a result from the postponement. But the financial resources are limited and should not be wasted for peak season prices. In case that you intend to participate in the IERS Workshop and have not yet sent the pre-registration form, please use the form in IERS Message No. 29, June 13, 2002, or at the workshop's web site http://www.iers.org/workshop_2002a/ With best regards Bernd Richter IERS Central Bureau, Director *************************************************************************** IERS Messages are edited and distributed by the IERS Central Bureau.
